Equine Metabolic Syndrome

If you suspect that your donkey has EMS, it's important to consult with a veterinarian who can diagnose and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment for EMS in donkeys may include:

  1. Dietary management: Feeding a low-carbohydrate, high-fiber diet is important to help manage blood sugar levels and control weight. Donkeys with EMS should be fed hay that is low in nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) such as sugar and starch, and limited grazing may be necessary.

  2. Exercise: Regular exercise is important to help increase insulin sensitivity and aid in weight loss. This may include hand walking or longeing the donkey, or providing opportunities for turnout and movement.

  3. Medications: In some cases, medications may be prescribed to help manage insulin resistance or prevent laminitis. Medications such as metformin or levothyroxine may be prescribed under the guidance of a veterinarian.

  4. Monitoring: Regular monitoring of body weight, body condition score, blood glucose, and insulin levels may be necessary to assess the effectiveness of treatment and make adjustments as needed.

It's important to work closely with your veterinarian to develop a                    comprehensive treatment plan for your donkey with EMS, as early                  diagnosis and management can help prevent serious complications.
